The Ice Begins to Break!
by Andrew Himes, executive director
We've been working to develop a strong foundation for
the Voices in Wartime Education Project for almost three
years now, and it feels like Americans are suddenly
starting to wake up to a couple of important realities.
First, the war in Iraq has spawned damage to soldiers,
their families, and their communities that we will be
working to heal for at the least a couple of
generations. Second, we must find a way for our youth to
explore, discuss, and understand the reality and
consequences of war. The mission of our education
project -- to heal the wounds of war and to create a
less violent world -- has never seemed more important.
Suddenly, we're noticing a whole set of wonderful new
opportunities for the programs of Voices in Wartime.
Campus Progress - Voices in Wartime in
colleges this fall
The Center for American Progress in Washington DC has
added the Voices in Wartime documentary film to their
Iraq Film Project, along with eight other films. Campus
Progress says: "Bring into sharp focus the realities on the ground in Iraq. Campus Progress can deliver award-winning films about the war and help you organize speaker panels that include war veterans, elected officials, policy experts, activists, and film directors."

South Sound Voices
Molly Gibbs is a community activist in Olympia,
Washington who has created "South Sound Voices" -- an
effort to bring the Voices in Wartime curricula into
high school and colleges across the South Puget Sound
region. Molly has organized a poetry event on September
26th to raise money for the project. She says: "We are
honored to present outstanding poets with diverse
backgrounds. This fundraiser launches the Voices in
Wartime program in South Sound colleges, universities
and high schools. Funds will support faculty workshops,
which have been well received by schools at Bellevue
Community College, Aviation High and other locations.
Voices in Wartime Executive Director, Andy Himes, will
introduce a clip from the powerful film of the same
title."

KCTS TV - The War - Partnership with Voices
The PBS affiliate station in Seattle, Channel 9, is
partnering with the Voices in Wartime Education Project
to present the new Ken Burns documentary, The War, which
tells the story of World War 2 from the point of view of
scores of people from four diverse communities in the
US. Andy Himes, from Voices, will facilitate several
KCTS gatherings of WW2 vets and community members, and
KCTS is helping raise funds for a new WW2 module of the
Voices in Wartime Curricula.

Aviation High School in Seattle
An astonishing and creative breakthrough at Aviation
High in Seattle -- a whole class of 100 sophomores spent
a few intense months studying the effects of war in
their community, with a focus on the war in Laos and
Southeast Asia, using the resources of Legacies of
War a Lao community-based group. Voices in Wartime
was a partner on this project, which saw students
designing museum exhibits, conducting oral histories,
producing a film and a web site, and much more.
